Buying Old Bananas
Murray wants to make friends, but Mavis is a loner and doesn’t need a new pal. Besides, Murray’s not someone she considers ‘good friend’ material. He’s old enough to be her grandfather, plays too much bingo, dresses funny and won’t take no for an answer. But Murray likes her and it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t mind playing the odd game of cribbage with him.
Despite attempts to discourage a budding friendship, Mavis grows fond of Murray. They fit together like Mutt and Jeff, which is better than being alone.
Every Sunday, Mavis attends Mass at St. Bart’s. Murray decides to accompany her and soon wants to become Catholic. Father Greg spends several months teaching him mysteries of the faith and Murray is challenged to get right with God.
One night, Murray is attacked while walking home from Bingo with a wad of winnings in his pocket. The assault triggers memories he’d sooner remain buried and the past comes back to bite him. Events that happened years ago could change everything between him and Mavis―unless they learn the essence of what it takes to be true friends.
