Murray is old. He likes making friends, playing cards and bingo. His life is lackadaisical except for one troubling matter ― he’s been carrying a burdensome secret for most of his adult life and wants to free his conscience, but doesn’t know how.
Mavis is a young woman in a complicated marriage. She plays ball and attends church, sometimes both on the same day. She doesn’t want or need to make a new connection, especially one with the old guy her husband invites home to play cribbage. Playing cards with Murray becomes a regular practice, and despite attempts to avoid a close attachment, Mavis grows fond of him. Their developing friendship follows a path that neither imagined it could lead. |

One night, Murray is attacked while walking home with a wad of bingo winnings in his pocket. The assault triggers memories he’d sooner remain buried, but the past comes back to bite him. Events from years ago expose what happened to Amanda, which could change everything between him and Mavis ― unless they learn the essence of what it takes to remain true friends.

Cecile Beaulieu finds inspiration in writing about people endemic to the rugged foothills of Alberta. Her latest book, ‘About an Old Guy’ takes place where the Rocky Mountains grace the western horizon. The novel addresses subjects pertinent to questions of morality in the genre of Catholic contemporary realism.
